Miss Frizzle’s Model for Uncertainty

If you were a kid in Canada during the 90s, then you must be familiar with The Magic School Bus. For those of you unfamiliar, well, I feel sorry for you!

Just kidding… (kind of)…

For the initiated: Miss Frizzle had a magic school bus that could shrink in size, go into space, and travel through time. As you can imagine, the class had some pretty epic field trips.

But the part I didn’t really appreciate until recently was Miss Frizzle’s motto: take chances, make mistakes, get messy!

As a kid, I didn’t fully get it. And how could I? Our entire educational system is based on NOT making mistakes. There’s no reward for bombing the test. So I got awesome at tests.

But decades later, in the real world, the lesson couldn’t be more clear. And in markets, it’s deafening.

That’s because the future is uncertain. Vastly so. Accept it: We can do our best to model and approximate; but, at the end of the day it’s just an educated guess.

The beauty of this is everyone is on the same playing field. Nobody has a crystal ball. And if someone claims to know what tomorrow holds, well, they’re lying to you.

Because we live in a Miss Frizzle world.

And the only way to make the most of it is to take chances, manage risk and keep learning. Do your best to think in probabilities and protect your downside. But whatever you do, don’t stop taking chances.

You might get messy but it’s the only way you can hit the jackpot.

Best Value Investing RSS Feeds for 2015

RSS FeedThe best value investing RSS feeds of 2015 can really make life easier on investors. That’s why I’ve decided to share my favourite RSS feeds from around the financial web this year.

But first, you might be wondering…

“Why Should I Worry About Value Investing RSS Feeds?”

Call me old fashioned. But RSS feeds are a fantastic way to keep up with the news. They tune out the signal and turn up the noise. In the frenetic world of the financial news media, the focus of RSS feeds is even more important. They’re the perfect way to consistently keep up with the trusted voices that matter… without getting distracted by the Business Insider headline du-jour.

By the way, if you don’t have an RSS feed set up, what are you waiting for? It’s free to get started and will almost certainly improve the efficiency of your digital information intake. So just head over to Feedly.com and create an account. It’s free and will pay investing-knowledge dividends for years to come.

Now without further ado… and presented in alphabetical order…

The Best Feee Value Investing RSS Feeds Online in 2015:

Crossing Wall Street: Eddy Elfenbein at Crossing Wall Street might be the funniest value investor blogging their way through 2015. I love reading his insightful posts. And I usually come away smiling. But jokes aside, his blog (and particularly his buy-list) are great places to find high quality stock ideas.

Dash of Insight: Jeff Miller’s value investing blogs is one of the newer additions to my RSS feeds. I discovered him on Seeking Alpha one day, and have been hooked ever since. Interview with Mohnish Pabrai and Guy Spier

If you’ve checked out the stock ideas book reviews, then you know I’m a big fan of Mohnish Pabrai and Guy Spier. These two value investors from the Warren Buffett school of thought both wrote great books that I highly recommend. But you don’t have to buy their books to get-in on some of their wisdom.

The two-part interview below shows Spier and Pabrai answering some great questions about their investing styles, their books and their outlooks on value investing. So if you’re trying to improve yourself as a value investor, I highly recommend you check these out:
