The Hour Between Dog and Wolf (Book Review)

The Hour Between Dog and Wolf Book Review

The Hour Between Dog and Wolf is a Finance Book Unlike Any Other…

The Hour Between Dog and Wolf, by John Coates, is about “risk-taking, gut feelings and the biology of boom and bust.

And let me tell you: The Hour Between Dog and Wolf is a financial book unlike any other. The reason is…

The Hour Between Dog and Wolf uses scientific data to adamantly dismiss the notion that humans are rational economic machines (which is obviously a popular view on wallstreet. And by the way:

The author, John Coates, is a neuroscientist, economist and ex-Wall Street trader. That’s why he is very well positioned to talk about the biology of stock market trading, (a very cool idea in itself)… So…

Let me show you some of the key findings of the book, as well as where it comes up short…

Here’s Why You Should Read “The Hour Between Dog and Wolf”:

The Hour Between Dog and Wolf looks at Wall Street, and big institutional trading desks, from a brand new perspective that is sure to make you question your most basic assumptions about markets. And by the way…

Any research that forces you to do a fundamental “reality check” is good reading in my book. Challenging and evolving your mental models is something Coates forces you to do. But The Hour Between Dog and Wolf goes even further…

The fact that the author’s arguments are backed by rigorous studies and scientific data make the conclusions that much more shocking. So if you think you’re the epitome of clear thinking and rational decision making (as I did). Then The Hour Between Dog and Wolf is going to give you a run for your money.

But here’s the best part:

When you read The Hour Between Dog and Wolf you become much more aware of how your body works during different stock market scenarios. Coates explains what hormones are sent out as your portfolio collapses, and how these chemicals influence your decision making. By understanding what these neurotransmitters do, and when they are released, you can become more in tune with your body and temper your behavior as a result. It’s not perfect, but getting the awareness this book provides is a huge first step.

Now let me bring you up to speed on another excellent aspect of The Hour Between Dog and Wolf…

Here’s What The Hour Between Dog And Wolf Teaches Best:

The Hour Between Dog and Wolf has many great features. But there is one part of this book that really stood out for me. It sounds kind of simple and obvious when I type it here (as it’s a little out of context). But simple does not preclude profound. So what do I mean?

One of the main lessons in The Hour Between Dog and Wolf is that your body controls your mind! I know you probably think that’s crazy. But it’s true. And this book proves it with robust scientific data. Yup. Like it or not…

It turns out your mind reacts to the cues released by your organ systems in times of stress. Physical cues from your environment elicit rapid responses throughout your body that dramatically influence your decision making. Humans (as a species) have not been sitting at desks long. Our evolution has sculpted us into living, breathing and moving organisms. And this is reflected in our physiology.

So when Coates shows how this body-first biology influences bond traders and derivatives dealers,  it’s entirely credible (even though it’s a little unbelievable at first). Another cool part is how the story unfolds like a novel, following men and women around a trading floor and looking “under the hood” to see how their bodies react to all of the different situations they encounter. So let me ask you:

Doesn’t this book sound interesting?

It’s honestly unlike anything you’ve ever read. And for that reason alone I can highly recommend The Hour Between Dog and Wolf. But one word of warning for you…

Here’s What Is Not Covered In “The Hour Between Dog and Wolf”:

As I’ve said, I really enjoyed reading The Hour Between Dog and Wolf. But sometimes buying a book for the wrong reasons can be disappointing (especially if you figure it out two thirds of the way through!). So I just want to make sure that you buy this book for the right reasons. And with that in mind:

You should know The Hour Between Dog and Wolf doesn’t talk too much about trading strategies. And honestly…

There are plenty of books to give you insight on how to use Japanese Candlesticks to plan your entry, or why you should buy stocks breaking out at 52 year highs. So if you’re looking for someone to tell you when to buy and sell which stocks based on the pulses of your pituitary gland, I’m afraid you’ve misunderstood the value of this book.

On the other hand, if you’re looking to understand your own trading behavior and what causes the intense emotional swings you experience as your profit and loss statement fluctuates, then this book is definitely for you.

The Hour Between Dog And Wolf – The Final Word:

Whether or not you decide to read “The Hour Between Dog and Wolf” I can honestly tell you that I have never seen another book like it…

The story-book style approach makes the content flow nicely (so the book is not a bunch of stuffy science facts like you might expect). And the amount of influence your biology has on your trading decisions is truly eye opening. So…
