Fooled by Randomness, by Nassim Nicholas Taleb is about, “The Hidden Role of Chance in Life and in the Markets.”
So here’s what you’re in for:
With Fooled by Randomness you get an explicit look at luck; and specifically, how we perceive it in our personal and professional lives. Taleb is a prop trader (at the time of writing), so the whole book is framed within the context of financial markets; wherein, it’s especially hard to discern luck vs. skill…
And here’s the best part: While you might expect a prop trader to be a boring writer, the inner-artist of Taleb shines bright. The chapter-style essays that make up the book are a delight to read. And you’ll find yourself upset to put it down.
So are you starting to see why Fooled by Randomness is interesting, in so many different ways? Well, let me twist your arm a little more.
Here’s Why You Should Read “Fooled By Randomness:”
Fooled By Randomness is an explicit look at the role of risk and luck in our everyday lives… and in the markets that we rely on.
At first, the idea that randomness was largely responsible for where I am today, rubbed me the wrong way. Because to most success-oriented people randomness is an ugly idea (we like to believe we are responsible for our wins). But…
Taleb manages to help you see the valuable aspects of randomness. And how it is often misunderstood. He provides compelling examples of how a return to randomness can add depth and meaning to experience. You can learn to embrace randomness for the better.
Stop planning so much!
And more importantly:
Fooled By Randomness makes it clear that chance is a part of life. You can’t avoid it. And if you accept this truth, (rather than bury your head in the sand)… you can thrive. Taleb explains the ways you can insulate yourself from randomness in the areas that matter most (such as your income). He also paints a vivid picture of what happens to people who don’t.
Taleb gives honest and insightful ideas that you can apply, in this guidebook like no other. And it’s written better than almost anything else out there. Seriously.
But before you go off and buy Fooled By Randomness… let me just warn you…
Two Things You Should Know About “Fooled By Randomness”
Although Fooled By Randomness is a great book that presents very interesting ideas in intelligent ways, there are two things about it that might stop you from buying. So let me save you the trouble.
Here’s what I think you should know about the book:
(1) Fooled by Randomness is a little bit ethereal. The information is often theoretical. And there are thought experiments abound. I found this aspect of the book fun. But if you’re looking for a tactical application then this book probably isn’t for you.
(2) You need to be able to laugh at yourself. If you’re looking for a self help book that is going to tell you everything will work out, then you are barking up the wrong tree. But hopefully you got that from the title.
That wasn’t so bad, right? I’m telling you: Fooled by Randomness is a great book. But the author has a distinct style and you need to be ready for it. Which reminds me…
The Best Part About “Fooled By Randomness:”
One of the most interesting things about Fooled by Randomness is the way that the book comes full circle. You see, Nassim is an essayist and statistician. He comes from a long line of Lebanese leisure men. And so his appreciation for the finer aspects of life really makes the book complete.
Let me tell you what I mean…
It would be very easy for a book on probability, written by a mathematician to be incredibly dry. On the other hand, Fooled by Randomness is anything but dense. The book uses anecdotes, stories and interesting ideas to help you appreciate the role of the randomness in everyday life and especially in finance.
It’s hard for me to express how much I enjoyed the way the words were laid out, page after page. But I need to mention it adamantly. The reason is…
This is a book that will leave you standing with your mouth open wondering… “WTF” (in a good way). So one last thing:
“Fooled By Randomness” – The Final Word:
A good friend of mine actually bought me Fooled by Randomness for my last birthday. And I’m really happy that I received it. After reading it… I’m even a little honoured that he associated the book with me! So…
You really must check out the Fooled by Randomness Amazon reviews for yourself. It’s definitely worth a read, because this is a book unlike most others. So I hope this has given you a good idea of what you can expect from Fooled by Randomness.
