There’s just one more thing I want to share with you before revealing the best swing trading stock screen for 2014…

I created this swing trading screen for 2014 with Josh Brown’s “You Are Here” article in mind. Josh (aka The Reformed Broker) is a CNBC talking head and an active Twitter persona. He has a very popular blog. And I found his 2014 state of the union to be especially helpful in providing a fundamental framework for which to formulate this swing trading screen for 2014. With that in mind…

As you can see above, the best swing trading screen for 2014 takes into account both fundamental and technical factors. Specifically…

The most important thing for me is to ensure that I am not overpaying for stocks. I do this by filtering for a low P/E ratio and a low price to book ratio. I’m also looking for positive return on equity and limited debt. While these criteria are by no means perfect they do help eliminate a lot of over-hyped stock ideas that are apt to get destroyed in a broad market sell-off. So focusing on fundamental quality is one aspect of the best swing trading screen and it’s especially important going into 2014 (wherein the stock market as a whole is liberally valued). Make sense?

Now…

From a technical perspective, the best swing trading stock screen of 2014 has a couple of important factors. First, you’ll notice there are two performance filters. I’m looking for stocks that are up over the last half a year, but that are pulling down today. I’ve also set up a filter for “trend line support” (I really love the “pattern field” in the finviz stock screener). The idea here is that I’m finding stocks that are doing well in the longer-term, but have pulled in on a shorter time frame to a level of prior support (so they should bounce). If you wanted to get really fancy here you could throw in a negative RSI field as well to try and zoom in on oversold stocks.

Finally:

The best swing trading stock screen for 2014 has a few descriptive factors that you may want to adjust based on your own trading needs and tolerance for risk. You’ll see I eliminated stocks with a market cap below $50M, and I require an average trading volume above 200K shares per day. To be sure, these are lower limits and sometimes I’ll move the market cap limit up to $300M (small-cap) and the volume requirements up to 500K shares per day. The important thing to keep in mind is that you have enough liquidity to get in and out of trades. That makes sense, right?
